Where Logseq is better

  • Mature, and still shipping.

Logseq OG has a 1.0.0 release and is now in maintenance. The database version reached 2.0.2 beta on 7 October 2026 [7, 9, 11].

  • Open source, free and self-hostable.

The code is AGPL-3.0, the app costs nothing, and sync can be self-hosted from open source [2, 3, 5, 10].

  • Your notes stay on your device.

Logseq OG keeps editable Markdown files in a folder. Database graphs live on your device, and Sync is end-to-end encrypted with your password [3, 6, 7]. Oknola keeps a cloud copy as the source of truth.

  • Journals-first outlining with deep tools.

You get daily journals, block references, queries, flashcards, PDF annotation and typed tags. There are 150+ plugins, 65+ of them ready for the database version [1, 5].

  • More places to use it.

There are desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux, a web app, and an iPhone beta on TestFlight that anyone can join, with 2.0.2 in App Store review as of 7 October [3, 5, 9, 10]. Oknola is on Mac and Android at launch, with iPhone and Windows later.

Where Oknola differs

  • The structure keeps itself true.

Oknola lays down one structure and keeps it. The pass, the built-in AI tidy-up, types, links and files each capture, and asks you about any it cannot place. A wrong file is refused or fixed, whether you wrote it or an agent did.

  • Oknola's agents see only the tags you give them.

With the optional agent layer, the assistant you message hands each job to a sub-agent. That sub-agent sees only the files carrying its tags, and a locked note is invisible to every Oknola agent. Agents you run yourself read whatever their machine lets them.

  • Business views on top of the same files.

Actions gathers the tasks you write inline anywhere, the Execution Canvas lets you drag a task onto an hour beside your Google Calendar, and the Operating Maps draw your business as live diagrams.

  • One plan, priced for one operator.

The whole Core is $30 a month or $270 a year, never per seat, with a storage counter, attachments up to 50 MB each and 5 GB of attachments in all, and a year of version history.

  • Export any time, or keep the laptop folder.

Your notes are plain markdown in the Open Knowledge Format, the open standard, and if you stop paying the app turns read-only and never deletes a note.

The trade-offs, plainly: Oknola is for one operator, with no guests, seats or shared workspaces. It has no plugin ecosystem, one fixed structure, a cloud copy as the source of truth, and a solo founder behind it.

Side by side

Logseq and Oknola on ten points. Logseq facts checked 29 September 2026, re-checked 14 October 2026.
Point Logseq Oknola
Built for Students, academics, writers, project managers and developers, per its homepage [1]. A solo operator running a business. One operator only: no guests, seats or shared workspaces.
Where your notes live OG: Markdown or Org files in a folder. Database version: one local SQLite file per graph [3, 6]. Oknola's cloud copy, encrypted at rest, never trained on. All note text on every device. Optional laptop folder.
Structure Freeform outliner, journals first. The database version adds typed tags and tables. You design the schema [5, 6]. One fixed structure, the Indexed Brain, from first open. Oknola types and tags each note: enforced, not suggested.
Who does the filing You do, or you set a template that applies when you tag a note [5, 6]. Oknola does. The pass types, links and files each capture. What it cannot place comes to you.
AI inside No built-in assistant yet. A ChatGPT plugin and agent skills are on its roadmap. Community AI plugins exist, but most don't say whether they support the database version [5, 8, 15]. The pass, the built-in AI tidy-up, in the plan. The agent layer is an optional add-on.
Outside AI (Claude Code, ChatGPT) OG: editable Markdown files [3, 14]. Database version: a local MCP server and a CLI [5, 13]. The laptop folder is plain markdown: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any agent that reads files opens it. On your own server, a headless mirror keeps the same files for your agent.
What an agent can reach Through the MCP server, with a token: search, create pages, tags and properties, add blocks [5]. An Oknola agent: only the files carrying the tags you gave it, never a locked note. Your own agents read what their machine lets them.
Price for one person No vendor price published [1]. The app is free. Sync in testing: $5 or $15 monthly, via Open Collective [2]. $30 a month or $270 a year, one plan. One operator, never per seat.
Trial or free tier The app is free [2]. Sync is invite-only in testing. Logseq Pro is planned, price not announced [3, 4, 5]. No free tier. 15 days free, no card, extends to 30 days, then 45. Read-only after, never deleted.
Leaving OG: copy the Markdown folder. Database version: the Markdown export drops block properties and timestamps [3, 5]. Export any time, or keep the laptop folder. Plain markdown opens anywhere.

Use both

Keeping both can make sense. Logseq suits daily journals, meeting notes and reading: flashcards, PDF annotation and block references over what you learn. Oknola holds the business: projects, actions, meetings and the Operating Maps, for one operator. The two do not sync, so give each note one home.

Moving from Logseq

  1. From Logseq OG: your graph is already a folder of Markdown (or Org) files, so copy the folder [3, 6].

  2. From the database version: use Export as “standard Markdown (no block properties)”, or turn on the Markdown Mirror, which writes the graph to disk one way [5, 12].

  3. Into Oknola: your Markdown comes in on day one and stays markdown. The pass gives each note a type and files it at a steady pace, keeping every original word for word.

  4. What does not travel as notes: the Markdown export drops block properties and timestamps [5], and the mirror leaves block ids in comments [12]. The EDN export is the complete one, but it is not markdown, so keep it as a file [5].
