## Where Obsidian is better

- ### Mature, with frequent releases.

Obsidian has shipped since 2020, and its latest release, 1.14, came out on 5 October 2026 \[9, 10\].

- ### Files in a folder on your device.

Your notes are Markdown files in a local folder, the app works offline, and optional Sync is end-to-end encrypted by default \[1, 3, 7\].

- ### Free to use, even for business.

The app is free for any purpose, commercial included, with no account. An optional commercial license ($50 per user a year) exists but is not required, and Sync starts at $4 per user per month billed annually \[2, 3, 5\].

- ### A system you design, with more than 8,900 plugins.

Nothing is imposed, and the directory lists more than 8,900 community plugins to build your own setup \[12\].

- ### Five platforms, and shared vaults.

It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, and Sync can share a vault with other people \[3, 16\].

## Where Oknola differs

- ### The structure keeps itself true.

Oknola lays down one structure and keeps it. The pass, the built-in AI tidy-up, types, links and files each capture, and asks you about any it cannot place. A wrong file is refused or fixed, whether you wrote it or an agent did.

- ### Oknola's agents see only the tags you give them.

With the optional agent layer, the assistant you message hands each job to a sub-agent. That sub-agent sees only the files carrying its tags, and a locked note is invisible to every Oknola agent. Agents you run yourself read whatever their machine lets them.

- ### Plain markdown, like your vault today.

Oknola works on one folder of plain markdown in the Open Knowledge Format, the open standard, so you change tools, not formats.

- ### Apps on top of the same files.

Finance, CRM, Food, Health, Reader and Course Watcher are optional add-ons, each priced before it opens, and removing one never touches your data.

- ### Export any time, or keep the laptop folder.

If you stop paying, the app turns read-only and every note stays readable and exportable.

**The trade-offs, plainly:** Oknola is for one operator, with no guests, seats or shared workspaces. It has no plugin ecosystem, one fixed structure, a cloud copy as the source of truth, and a solo founder behind it.

## Side by side

Obsidian and Oknola on ten points. Obsidian facts checked 29 September 2026, re-checked 14 October 2026.
| Point | Obsidian | Oknola |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Built for | Private notes, journals and knowledge bases, plus shared Sync vaults \[1, 3\] | A solo operator running a business. One operator only: no guests, seats or shared workspaces. |
| Where your notes live | Markdown in a folder on your device, offline. Optional Sync, end-to-end encrypted by default \[1, 3, 7\] | Oknola's cloud copy, encrypted at rest, never trained on. All note text on every device. Optional laptop folder. |
| Structure | Freeform: no imposed folders, types or tags. Reviewers mention the learning curve and setup time \[15\] | One fixed structure, the Indexed Brain, from first open. Oknola types and tags each note: enforced, not suggested. |
| Who does the filing | You, by hand or with plugins you configure. No native AI does it \[2, 9\] | Oknola does. The pass types, links and files each capture. What it cannot place comes to you. |
| AI inside | No native assistant and no AI price. Web Clipper Interpreter uses your own key \[2, 11\] | The pass, the built-in AI tidy-up, in the plan. The agent layer is an optional add-on. |
| Outside AI (Claude Code, ChatGPT) | Plain files, so Claude Code and Codex work on them \[8, 13\]. MCP servers are community-made \[14\] | The laptop folder is plain markdown: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any agent that reads files opens it. On your own server, a headless mirror keeps the same files for your agent. |
| What an agent can reach | Headless Sync lets agent tools work on a synced vault, not the whole computer \[8\] | An Oknola agent: only the files carrying the tags you gave it, never a locked note. Your own agents read what their machine lets them. |
| Price for one person | App free, commercial use included. Sync Standard $4 per user per month billed annually, or $5 monthly \[2, 3\] | $30 a month or $270 a year, one plan. One operator, never per seat. |
| Trial or free tier | Free for any purpose, no account needed \[2, 5\] | No free tier. 15 days free, no card, extends to 30 days, then 45. Read-only after, never deleted. |
| Leaving | Copy the vault folder. Sync's server copy can be deleted 30 days after a lapse \[1, 6\] | Export any time, or keep the laptop folder. Plain markdown opens anywhere. |

## Use both

Keep Obsidian where other people are involved: a vault you share through Sync, or a site on Obsidian Publish. Oknola is built for one operator. Let it hold the company brain, your Spaces, Projects, People and Meetings, and keep the shared work in Obsidian.

## Moving from Obsidian

1. **Copy your vault folder.** Your notes are already Markdown, so nothing needs exporting \[1\]. If you use Sync, copy the folder from a device: the server copy can be deleted 30 days after a subscription lapses \[6\].

2. **Bring the notes in on day one.** Nothing is converted. The pass gives each note a type and files it into the structure at a steady pace, however large the vault, keeping every original word for word.

3. **Your bases open as they are.** Obsidian saves Bases views as `.base` files \[17\], the same format Oknola's Views use.

4. **Know what stays behind.** Plugins don't come along, since Oknola has no plugin ecosystem. Wikilinks, highlights and callouts are the same markdown Oknola's editor writes, so they read the same.

5. **Keep Claude Code on the same files.** On a laptop, the optional folder mirrors your notes as plain files, so Claude Code keeps working on them. More in [Claude Code and Obsidian for running a business](https://oknola.com/guides/claude-code-obsidian-business/).

## Questions

### Is Oknola an Obsidian alternative?

Yes, if the job is running a business on your notes. Oknola keeps the same plain markdown, then types, tags and files it and scopes agents by tag. If you want to build your own system with plugins, or need Windows, Linux, iPhone or shared vaults, Obsidian fits better.

### Can I move my Obsidian notes into Oknola?

Yes. Your vault is already Markdown, so you copy the folder. Notes come in on day one with nothing converted, and the pass types and files each one, keeping every original word for word. Bases open as they are. Plugins don't come along.

### Does Obsidian have an AI assistant?

No. Obsidian has no built-in assistant and no AI add-on on its pricing page. Its one first-party AI feature, the Web Clipper Interpreter, runs on your own provider key. Because the vault is plain files, Claude Code or Codex can work on it, and community plugins such as Copilot add AI inside the app.
